Kitchen Remodel Selection Order: What to Decide Before Ordering
Choosing a backsplash is easier when you know which countertop it will meet. Ordering cabinets is safer when the appliance models are settled. A useful kitchen selection order follows these dependencies.

The practical answer
Start with what stays and changes, select exact appliance models, approve cabinet drawings, then resolve sink and countertop details before coordinating finishes. Keep one written selection list. This is a selection guide, not a fixed construction schedule; existing conditions, products and scope determine the final work sequence.
1. Start with what stays and what changes
List the cabinets, appliances, flooring and fixtures you want to keep. Then separate necessary changes from optional upgrades. A cabinet repaint and new countertop involve different decisions from a layout change with relocated appliances.
Bring those priorities to the walkthrough. Measurements and a look at existing conditions help establish whether the proposed layout works and which details need further trade assessment. An inspiration photo can communicate a look, but it cannot establish dimensions or what is behind a wall.
2. Choose appliance models before approving cabinet openings
“Standard dishwasher” or “counter-depth refrigerator” is not enough information for a cabinet order. Record the exact model numbers and obtain the current installation documents.
Review the refrigerator, dishwasher, range or cooktop, oven and ventilation equipment together. Relevant details can include opening dimensions, depth, door and handle movement, ventilation space and utility connections. A refrigerator that fits between cabinets may still have an awkward door swing.
Check delivery access as well. Confirm model-specific requirements with the project team before cabinet dimensions and related work are committed. A product substitution should trigger another fit review.
3. Approve the cabinet drawings as a complete layout
Review appliance openings, fillers, finished panels, drawers, pullouts and door movement on the same drawing. Look at everyday use: can you open the dishwasher, reach adjacent storage and move through the kitchen comfortably?
Confirm the cabinet style, finish and hardware separately from layout approval. Identify who can approve each decision. Before a custom order is released, make sure the final drawing matches the selected appliances and the measured space.
4. Resolve sink and countertop details before fabrication
Choose the exact sink model and mounting style before the countertop cutout is finalized. Discuss the faucet, soap dispenser and other accessories, including their hole locations and usable space around them.
The sink’s manufacturer template and the fabricator’s requirements matter more than a general description such as “large single bowl.” Cabinet compatibility and any required support also need review.
Ask the project team what must be installed or finalized before countertop templating. Do not assume a showroom measurement or preliminary drawing is the final fabrication measurement.
5. Coordinate finishes with the physical details
Review countertop and backsplash samples together, then decide the backsplash layout, edges and termination points. Include outlets, switches and planned lighting in that discussion.
Flooring choices also affect details beyond color. Finished floor height and transitions can influence appliance openings and connections to adjacent rooms. Installation requirements vary by flooring product, so resolve how the chosen system meets cabinets and appliances before work begins.
Confirm these interfaces before treating a finish selection as complete.
6. Keep one written selection list
For each item, record the exact product, model, finish, supplier, responsible approver and decision date. Note who orders it and whether availability has been checked.
When a selection changes, review the possible price, fit and schedule effects before authorizing the replacement. Keep allowances and unresolved choices visible. Conditions uncovered during construction may require another site-specific assessment and written scope decision.
Useful answers
Before the walkthrough.
Should I order cabinets before choosing appliances?
Confirm exact appliance models and installation requirements before approving related cabinet openings. Review fit again if a model changes.
Can I finalize a countertop cutout from a general sink size?
Choose the exact sink and mounting style, then review the manufacturer template and fabricator requirements. General sink dimensions do not replace the required fabrication information.
